Why would you want to leap out of a perfectly good aircraft? To fly a winged jetpack over the city of Rio de Janeiro, of course – It sounds nuts, but it’s just a day in the life for Yves Rossy, the self proclaimed “Jetman”.
Yves Rossy took to the skies around the Corcovado mountain, topped by the world-renowned statue of ‘Christ the Redeemer’, and landed on Copacabana beach.
The BBC said the 11-minute flight began after he was dropped from a helicopter over Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, and took him over Ipanema, Copacabana, and past Sugar Loaf Mountain.
According to his website, the 52-year-old Swiss became the first and only man in the history of aviation to fly with a jet-propelled wing in 2006. He was first a military pilot and then worked as a captain with Swiss International Air Lines on commercial flights.
His website said he ‘has always dedicated all his free time to flight and experimented all its forms’, creating a harness with inflatable wing panels that he subsequently developed into a rigid wing with four engines.
