Have you ever been obsessed with a new song and you have been singing it all day, but don’t know the exact lyrics ? Worry not, there is a site for that, too. Ilan Zechory, co-founder of the Brooklyn-based start-up Rap Genius, is making a killing by “explaining” song lyrics. His site, Rap Genius is filled with the lyrics to more than 1 million songs. You might think, what is this guy talking about? It is in fact pretty simple: Users click on a word or line of their favourite song and a box pops up with an explanation. Those explanations, or annotations as they’re called on the site, can include text, links, photos and even videos posted on the site by other users, and sometimes even the artists themselves.
The site has now become one of the biggest in the world, according to Zechory, bigger than Facebook, bigger than Google, and even bigger than Yahoo and CNBC. The site started as a “hip-hop Wikipedia” in 2009 and now boasts an incredible 25 million unique visitors a month and has exploded into all genres of music.
Besides finding your favourite song lyrics you can also search for more information linked to your favourite artists such as Justin Timberlake, Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga. It is so popular that even 50 Cent songs include lyrics which are explained in short videos by 50 Cent himself.
Rap Genius is free to use and 100 percent free of ads—in other words the site generates no revenue. Although Rap Genius has not generated any profit yet, it has received a $15 million investment via Andreessen Horowitz – a Silicon Valley venture capitalist with shares in Skype, Facebook and Twitter, to name just a few. Not bad!
So if you are reading this Andreessen Horowitz – Give me a shout, we could need some investment! 🙂
