21-year-old chemical engineering student Christine Jiaxin Lee, from Malaysia, wrongly received $4.6 million from her bank. The Westpac bank mistakenly transferred the amount into her bank account as an overdraft four years ago. It didn’t take long for the student to notice and Lee allegedly spent £1.7 million in less than a year. She bought dozens of expensive designer handbags and made countless cash transfers.
The responsible police fraud unit had started their investigation into the withdrawal of the money in 2012, but only issued the arrest warrant on March 4 of this year. According to Lee’s Lawyer the police currently struggle to prove that the spending of the money was illegal. The reason for this is that she was given the money and had not taken the money from anyone. The student was arrested by the Australian Federal Police at Sydney Airport last Wednesday and will appear in court on the 21 June 2016. Image Source: Screenshot/Facebook/2016
