Scientists have discovered a new giant species of spider in the rainforest in Guyana. Known as the South American Goliath birdeater (Theraphosa blondi), the spider is currently the largest spider on earth. Its leg span can reach up to 30 cm, and it can weigh more than 170 grams!
The giant birdeater even makes a very unique sound when its walks, as its feet have hardened tips and claws that produce a very distinct, clicking sound, according to scientists. Although the spider has e venomous bite, it is not deadly to humans, so relax 🙂 It might be named birdeater but it usually doesn’t eat birds, although it is certainly capable of killing small mammals.
The spider will mainly eat frogs and insects, but its main prey is actually earthworms. Nevertheless I would like to not come across one, ever ! Image Source: Screenshot/Youtube/2015
